Publisher's Corner: Getting Your Kids To Listen. Take 5 and Play.

By Melissa Shrader Editor Publisher Loveland Macaroni KID August 21, 2023

Welcome to Publisher's Corner

How many times have you asked your kids to help with something? How many times have they actually listened? It seems to depend on age, motivation and relationship.

I found something that helps with listening for littles through elementary. Think about what your kids love to do, most kids love to just simply play. If you take a 5 minutes and just simply play with them. No instructions, no correcting, no discipline, just play. Let them lead. This gives them time to simply be kids and connect with you. Connection is key. Spending just a few minutes doing something they like can help create a connection that will help you both feel more trusting and relaxed. It's not fail proof but it helps greatly.

As your kids age they will be interested in other things, that's when you take time to do the simple thing that they are into. Just for a bit. Just sitting and listening, no judgment, no criticism, just listen. Tune into their interests and create the trust and build the relationship. Listening will come easier to them. Along with trust.

Keep it simple and have fun. Kids are only kids once. I know it's cliché but it's very true. Let your kids be themselves and take the time to enjoy connecting with them on their level. You won't regret it and they will listen more because they feel that you are listening to them.
