Reading Struggles: One mom’s story LearningRx Fort Collins

April 15, 2018

When Lily was in kindergarten, she couldn’t grasp phonemes or write letters like other kids her age. Her mother, Wendy, describes the long list of interventions that followed: “We worked with a company that specializes in dyslexia. We tried the Sarah Barton reading program. We tried Orton-Gillingham workbooks, workbooks to correct reversals, workbooks for handwriting. We tried an online service on phonemes. We even tried brain scans and qEEGs.”

At that point, the family’s pediatrician suggested they call LearningRx. “Lily started LearningRx,” her mother recalls, “and she started reading.” During Lily’s first week at LearningRx, there were changes in her attitude as she began to experience small successes. Over the next few months, there were bigger changes, as well.

“One of Lily’s goals had always been to walk into a library, pick up any book she wanted, and be able to read it,” Wendy explains. “About two months into her LearningRx program, we walked into a bookstore and Lily started going from book to book, reading the covers. Wherever she turned, she would exclaim, ‘I can read that!’ She was so excited!” Since then, Lily’s reading skills have continued to grow. Wendy, who homeschools her daughter, reports:

“Before LearningRx, Lily would get very frustrated. I used to have to read everything to her. Now she’s doing it

on her own!”

But perhaps the most unexpected change for this family is that learning— and life—are more fun. Wendy explains, “Before LearningRx, I had educational concerns, wondering how to support Lily academically. I also had maternal concerns, wondering how she was going to fare in life. And all of that took a lot of energy. “Now we do more fun things, take on more in-depth projects. I have more energy to be a better teacher and mom now that we’re not fighting so much over reading…or writing…or just sitting at a desk!”

Wendy says her only regret is that they didn’t try LearningRx sooner. “You know, I had a misconception that Lily had a reading problem. What I discovered was that her whole brain needed a workout. It turned out that her executive function, processing speed, attention, and auditory processing skills were weak. But everything really came together for Lily during this program. It’s been incredible!”
